The edited volume “Participatory Design: City, Environment, and Climate Change” is a document of the conference of the same name organised by the Commonspace workers’ cooperative in November 2021. The conference was one of the first large-scale and international scientific meetings focusing on participatory design and was held under the auspices of the Participatory Lab’s interdisciplinary community.
It contains the invited speakers’ and others’ contributions, which are representative of the dialogue that has been conducted in terms of theory, research, practice, and methodologies, as well as the planned or implemented actions and policies around the issue of Participatory Design. The scientific editing was undertaken by Thanos Andritsos, Giorgos Velegrakis, Aliki Kosyfologou, Eleni Mougiakou, Dimitris Poulios, and Sofia Tsadari.
The six chapters of the book reflect the contemporary debate on Participatory Design processes in different fields and scales, from the neighbourhood level to consultation and co-shaping processes for global challenges such as climate change. From the academic classroom and the research lab to the field and social initiatives. From architecture and geography to cultural management and the study of social movements.
The volume combines local and international experiences, theoretical approaches, and examples of applications at different scales. This renders it a highly valuable contribution to the domestic debate as well as an important addition to the upgraded international debate.
