The purpose of this work is to shed light on a significant episode in the history of Greece`s ill-fated attempt to succeed defeated Turkey as the sovereign power in Eastern Thrace and parts of Asia Minor in the aftermath of the First World War and in fulfilment of the `Great Idea`, the liberation of fellow Greeks still outside the national fold. The Peace Treaty between Turkey and the victorious Entente powers was long delayed and when it was finally signed in August 1920, conditions already existed that would eventually secure its demise: Anglo-British rivalry, the revival of the Turkish nationalism and war fatigue that limited the options and influenced the fate of the governments involved.
