The ancient Stageira (also Stagira or Stag(e)iros) lies in the administrative district of the modern village of Olympiada, which lies in north-east Chalkidiki, on the south coast of the gulf of Strymon opposite the delta of the Strymon river. The ruins of the ancient city are just 500 m. to the north-east of Olympiada, on a small, craggy, beautiful peninsula, known locally as Liotopi.
